An onlay is a custom-made dental restoration crafted from composite material, gold, or tooth-colored porcelain. Porcelain onlays are especially popular because they closely resemble natural teeth. Sometimes called a partial crown, an onlay is designed and fabricated by a professional dental laboratory and permanently cemented onto the tooth by your dentist.
Onlays are used to conservatively repair teeth with large defective fillings or damage caused by decay or trauma. They are an excellent alternative to full crowns because less tooth structure needs to be removed during preparation. Unlike inlays, onlays restore one or more of the chewing cusps that have been affected.
While highly durable and long-lasting, onlays may eventually need replacement.
Reasons for Onlay Restorations:
- Broken or fractured teeth
- Cosmetic enhancement
- Decayed teeth
- Fractured fillings
- Large fillings
What to Expect During an Onlay Procedure:
First Appointment:
- Precise impressions (molds) are taken to create the custom onlay.
- The tooth is numbed, and any decay or old filling material is removed.
- The tooth is cleaned and shaped to ensure a proper fit for the onlay.
- A temporary filling is placed to protect the tooth while the onlay is fabricated by the dental laboratory.
Second Appointment:
- The permanent onlay is carefully cemented into place.
- Minor adjustments may be made to ensure a proper fit and comfortable bite.
After the procedure, your dentist will provide care instructions. Maintaining good oral hygiene, a balanced diet, and regular dental visits will help prolong the life of your onlay and keep your smile healthy.
