If you are experiencing extreme sensitivity or advanced periodontal disease, a tooth extraction may be necessary. With a simple extraction, the dentist can safely remove the affected tooth without major surgery.
Reasons for a tooth extraction
A simple extraction can relieve pain or prepare for another cosmetic or restorative procedure. Common reasons include:
- Advanced periodontal disease that has loosened tooth roots
- Extra or retained baby teeth blocking adult teeth
- Preparing for orthodontic treatment
- Fractured or malformed teeth
- Severe tooth decay that cannot be treated with root canal therapy
How is a tooth extracted?
The dentist will begin by taking X-rays to plan the procedure. After administering a local anesthetic, the tooth is gently loosened with an elevator and then removed using forceps. In some cases, a tooth may need to be sectioned into smaller pieces for easier removal.
Once the tooth is removed, gauze is placed in the socket, and you will be asked to bite down to control bleeding. Stitches may be placed if necessary.
If you become ill before your scheduled extraction, please contact our office so alternative arrangements can be made. For any questions or concerns, reach out to your dentist.
